Le comparatif et superlatif : définition et formation

Définition

Le comparatif compare deux éléments (A est plus/moins/aussi grand que B). Le superlatif exprime le degré extrême d'une qualité dans un groupe (A est le plus/moins grand de tous). En anglais, leur formation dépend du nombre de syllabes de l'adjectif.

Explication

Comparatif : adjectifs courts (1-2 syllabes) : adjectif + -er + than (tall → taller than, happy → happier than). Adjectifs longs (3+ syllabes) : more/less + adjectif + than (interesting → more interesting than). Superlatif : adjectifs courts : the + adjectif + -est (tall → the tallest). Adjectifs longs : the most/least + adjectif. Irréguliers importants : good/well → better → the best ; bad → worse → the worst ; far → farther/further → the farthest/furthest.

Exemple concret

'Paris is bigger than Lyon, but Tokyo is the biggest city I have visited.' 'This exercise is more difficult than the previous one, but the last one was the most difficult of all.' 'She speaks English better than me, but he speaks it the best in the class.'

Comment former le comparatif d'égalité ?+
On utilise as + adjectif + as : 'She is as tall as her brother.' Pour la négation : 'He is not as fast as his sister / He is less fast than his sister.'
Quand double-t-on la consonne finale ?+
Pour les adjectifs courts terminant par consonne-voyelle-consonne (CVC) : big → bigger/biggest, hot → hotter/hottest, thin → thinner/thinnest. Exception : les adjectifs terminant en -w ou -x (new → newer, slow → slower).
Quelle est la différence entre farther et further ?+
Farther se réfère à la distance physique : 'My house is farther from the school than yours.' Further a un sens figuré en plus : 'We need further discussion.' Dans la pratique, further est de plus en plus utilisé pour les deux sens.
